10 Steps to Avoid Data Center Outages

Many circumstances can lead to a data center outage.  The most common involve human errors and lack of preventive and predictive maintenance. Many steps can be taken to avoid outages that result in costly downtime.  Following these 10 steps can minimize your risk to downtime caused by avoidable outages in your data center or critical environment:

1. Only allow qualified professionals into your facility, especially those working on critical equipment

2. Conducting an annual site audit for early detection of potential issues

3. Educate and train employees regarding the EPO and emergency procedures

4. Ensure all critical equipment receives preventive maintenance according to manufacturer specifications

5. Design your data center or critical environment properly with redundancy and no single points of failure

6. Shield all EPO buttons

7. Correctly label all components in your critical environment

8. Install an adequate fire detection system

9. Perform proper maintenance on the UPS batteries and have at least two battery strings for redundancy

10. Ensure your UPS system is the correct size and power rating for your needs
